In Loving Memory of Fr. Jim McCartney

In our shared journey with West Texas Organizing Strategy, I had the privilege of sitting down with Fr. Jim McCartney for a relational meeting—an experience that remains one of the most meaningful I’ve ever had. We met while he was still serving as an active priest at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. What began as a simple conversation unfolded into hours of deep, honest dialogue, where time seemed to stand still.

 

Fr. Jim spoke openly about his life as a priest, his upcoming retirement, and his excitement about dedicating more time to the things he loved. He was candid, curious, and full of stories—each one revealing his deep commitment to faith, community, and connection.

 

Toward the end of our conversation, I asked him what he hoped his legacy would be. He paused, reflecting in silence, and then shared something simple yet profound: he wanted to be remembered as a better listener.

 

Over the past few days, as we’ve celebrated Fr. Jim’s life, it’s clear that he succeeded in that wish. So many people felt truly seen and heard by him. His ability to listen with intention and compassion left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
