TXU Energy, Beat the Heat, Fan Give-away, Catholic Charities

With summer heat impacting the most vulnerable Texans, TXU Energy is teaming up with Catholic Charities of Lubbbock to provide relief.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
On Saturday, August 1, beginning at 7 AM, volunteers will distribute nearly 400 fans to the South Plains families in need.&nbsp; Fans will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, in a drive-through distribution at 102 Avenue J. in Lubbock, Texas.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Fans will be purchased with a $10,000 donation from TXU Energy's signature Beat the Heat program.&nbsp; For more than 25 years, TXU Energy has helped thousands of Texans stay safe and cool in dangerous summer heat.&nbsp;

Catholic Charities of Lubbock is proud to announce that longtime South Plains runner, PJ Sullivan will serve as the honorary chair of the 2026 Run to Remember, which is proudly sponsored by TXU Energy.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
At 80 years young, Sullivan is celebrating an incredible 60 years&nbsp; of running and inspiring generations of runners since she first began running in 1966.&nbsp; Over the years, she has participated in hundreds of races, completing 50 marathons - including the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon, and even conquered an ultramarathon.

Catholic Charities of Lubbock recognized Child Abuse Prevention Month with a special event on Friday, April 10&nbsp;calling attention to the critical role safe adults play in protecting children.

Catholic Charities staff were joined by children from the neighboring Guadalupe Early Learning Center for a morning of kid‑friendly activities designed to uplift, educate, and celebrate childhood. The event included hands‑on activities and a small petting zoo featuring animals from Storybook Farm, offering a joyful and welcoming environment while sparking an important conversation about prevention and support.

Catholic Charities of Lubbock is proud to announce that it has been selected as an official host site for the People of Hope: Faith-Filled Stories of Neighbors Helping Neighbors traveling museum, a nationwide storytelling initiative produced by Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA). The museum will visit Lubbock September 21&ndash;22, 2026, and will be free and open to the public at the Diocese of Lubbock, 4620 4th Street.
&nbsp;
The People of Hope Museum is a first of its kind, immersive mobile experience housed inside a digitally outfitted semitruck. Over a three-year national tour, it will visit more than 150 communities across the United States to inspire service, strengthen community connection, and highlight the transformative impact of Christian compassion.
&nbsp;
Funded through a 2024 grant of nearly $5 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. as part of its National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life, the museum showcases 42 original video stories told by Catholic Charities staff and volunteers nationwide. Each narrative offers a powerful glimpse into what it means to bring hope to someone facing their darkest moment.

In addition to the storytelling videos, the People of Hope Museum includes:
- An interactive poverty simulation that allows visitors to step into another person&rsquo;s lived experience.

- National and local data illustrating the scope of need and the importance of community-based support
- A recording studio where attendees can share their own stories of hope, service, and connection.

&ldquo;Filled with inspiring stories of neighbors helping neighbors, the People of Hope Museum will restore your faith in humanity,&rdquo; said CCUSA President and CEO Kerry Alys Robinson. &ldquo;We are thrilled to bring this experience to communities nationwide, including here in Lubbock.&rdquo;

Catholic Charities of Lubbock and TXU Energy invite the community to participate in the 3rd Annual Run to Remember on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 8 a.m.&nbsp; The event will start at Catholic Charities (102 Avenue J.), with a scenic route through the historic Guadalupe Neighborhood, Aztlan Park, and Mackenzie Park.&nbsp;

The Run to Remember is more than just a race - it is an opportunity for the community to come together in support of individuals and families facing poverty, homelessness, hunger, and crisis across Lubbock and the South Plains.&nbsp;

Participants can register as individuals for $40 or as a team of 8 for $300.&nbsp; Registration includes a t-shirt, timing bib, and completion medal.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Proceeds from the event provide unrestricted funding to Catholic Charities of Lubbock, allowing the agency to meet the most urgent needs in the community. These funds include a wide range of services, including:
&nbsp;
- Free counseling for children 17 and under through the Family and Youth Success program
- Immigration services including citizenship and family-based assistance
- Parent Empowerment Program to help families break the cycle of poverty by furthering their training and education
- Kinship Navigation Program, supporting those caring for family children and keeping them out of foster care
- Direct Assistance with utilities, food, clothing, prescriptions, and vision care
- Food pantry and hygiene closet for individuals and families in need&nbsp;

The event brought together individuals committed to uplifting the most vulnerable in our community and highlighted the spirit of service that defines the agency&rsquo;s mission.

The evening was guided by Kurt Kiser of FOX 34, who served as emcee. Guests also heard uplifting remarks from Bishop Robert M. Coerver of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lubbock, who reminded attendees of the call to be &ldquo;salt and light&rdquo; in the world.

With the holiday season in full swing, TXU Energy and Catholic Charities of Lubbock, along with support from H-E-B, and the Diocese of Lubbock, are teaming up to spread winter warmth to Lubbock-area families.
&nbsp;
For the second year in a row, TXU Energy is donating $10,000 to provide 300 turkeys to families in need. The turkeys will be distributed on Friday, December 19, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Guadalupe Youth &amp; Family Center of the Diocese of Lubbock, located at 101 N. Avenue P. (the former Guadalupe Elementary School, across from St. Joseph&rsquo;s Catholic Church.)
&nbsp;
Frozen turkeys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required.&nbsp;The limit is one turkey per vehicle.
&nbsp;
TXU Energy&rsquo;s Winter Warmth donation is the latest in the company&rsquo;s long history of assistance in Texas communities.&nbsp; The initiative helps provide food, lap blankets, hygiene items and more to our neighbors in need.

At a time when more families than ever are struggling to make ends meet due to rising costs and limited resources, Catholic Charities of Lubbock is expressing deep gratitude to Wellpoint for their generous $5,000 donation to the agency&rsquo;s Emergency Food Pantry.
&nbsp;
The Catholic Charities Emergency Food Pantry serves hundreds of individuals and families each month who are facing food insecurity. Between the months of August through October of this year alone, the food pantry distributed 2,450 instances of food assistance. The donation from Wellpoint will help ensure that shelves remain stocked with nutritious food for those who turn to the organization for help.
&nbsp;
Wellpoint helps improve health care access and quality for thousands of Texans who participate in the state&rsquo;s Medicaid programs.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Wellpoint&rsquo;s generosity will make a real difference for families in crisis,&rdquo; said Cynthia Quintanilla, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Lubbock. &ldquo;We are so thankful for their continued partnership and commitment to helping our community. This is not the first time Wellpoint has stepped forward to help. The company also supports Catholic Charities&rsquo; Free Hygiene Closet, which provides essential hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and more to individuals and families in need. Several Wellpoint associates in Lubbock volunteered with the organization this week to assemble family food bags.

The Kinship Navigation Program has been granted one more year of funding to continue serving kinship families in Lubbock and six surrounding counties.
&nbsp;
This program exists to walk alongside families who are raising children that are not biologically theirs&mdash;grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and close family friends who have stepped in to provide care and stability. We know the unique challenges kinship families face, and we are honored to continue providing free services, guidance, and resources to support them.
&nbsp;
Our dedicated staff, Terri Rodriguez and Gracie Perez, are here to help guide families through this journey. Whether it&rsquo;s connecting with community resources, navigating financial or legal concerns, or simply finding encouragement, they are committed to ensuring families do not feel alone.
&nbsp;

In our shared journey with West Texas Organizing Strategy, I had the privilege of sitting down with Fr. Jim McCartney for a relational meeting&mdash;an experience that remains one of the most meaningful I&rsquo;ve ever had. We met while he was still serving as an active priest at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. What began as a simple conversation unfolded into hours of deep, honest dialogue, where time seemed to stand still.
&nbsp;
Fr. Jim spoke openly about his life as a priest, his upcoming retirement, and his excitement about dedicating more time to the things he loved. He was candid, curious, and full of stories&mdash;each one revealing his deep commitment to faith, community, and connection.
&nbsp;
Toward the end of our conversation, I asked him what he hoped his legacy would be. He paused, reflecting in silence, and then shared something simple yet profound: he wanted to be remembered as a better listener.
&nbsp;
Over the past few days, as we&rsquo;ve celebrated Fr. Jim&rsquo;s life, it&rsquo;s clear that he succeeded in that wish. So many people felt truly seen and heard by him. His ability to listen with intention and compassion left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.

With summer heat impacting the most vulnerable Texans, TXU Energy teamed up with Catholic Charities of Lubbock and Love the Hub to provide relief.&nbsp;

On Saturday, August 9th, volunteers distributed more than 700 fans to South Plains families in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Catholic Charities is seeking donations of nonperishable food and household staples to meet an increasing demand for food assistance. Commonly needed items include canned soup, canned vegetables, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, oatmeal, cereal, rice, and beans.

&ldquo;Our emergency food pantry is one of the most critical ways we respond to people in crisis,&rdquo; said Cynthia Quintanilla, Executive Director of Catholic Charities. &ldquo;Whether it&rsquo;s a senior on a fixed income, a family facing unexpected hardship, or someone without a place to call home&mdash;your donation can help us bring hope and stability to their lives.&rdquo;

The 2nd Annual Catholic Charities Run to Remember, proudly sponsored by TXU Energy, took place on Saturday, June 14, 2025.&nbsp; A total of 372 runners and walkers registered for the event - an increase of 44% of participants from the previous year.&nbsp;

What do you do day-to-day at Catholic Charities of Lubbock?
As a family engagement specialist at Catholic Charities of Lubbock, my days are varied and often fast-paced. I focus on building strong relationships with families and connecting them with the resources they need to thrive. This often means attending parent meetings, coordinating transportation to appointments, helping families navigate the application process for services and developing individualized support plans. I facilitate parenting classes, hold parent and family sessions and host family-oriented programs. I also regularly participate in trainings, attend community outreach events and collaborate with local partners to enhance the support systems available to families in our community. I&rsquo;m committed to fostering a sense of belonging and empowering families to achieve their goals.
&nbsp;
What do you love about your city/community?
Lubbock has a remarkable spirit of community. I love the strong sense of volunteerism and the way people come together to support one another. While there are challenges, the willingness of individuals and organizations to step up, the vibrant local businesses and the friendly faces you encounter every day are deeply inspiring.
&nbsp;
What is your community&rsquo;s greatest challenge that you hope to address through your work?
One of our greatest challenges is the widening gap between families&rsquo; needs and the available resources. This includes access to affordable housing, reliable childcare, job training and mental health support. My goal is to help bridge this gap by providing easy access to information, coordinating resources and advocating for policies that will improve the lives of families in our community.
&nbsp;
Why is it important to serve your community and neighbors in need?
Serving our neighbors in need is a fundamental aspect of the Catholic faith. To me, it&rsquo;s about embodying the Gospel message of compassion and putting the needs of others first. Seeing the positive impact on families and recognizing the resilience of the people I serve fuels my passion and inspires me every day. It&rsquo;s about striving to create a more just and equitable place for everyone.
&nbsp;
Tell us about a formative experience you had as a young person that affected your perspective on service.
As a teenager, I volunteered at my local church. I saw firsthand the struggles faced by people in our community who needed help. This experience instilled in me a strong desire to utilize my skills and resources to create a tangible and positive impact on others&rsquo; lives. It cemented my belief in the importance of service and compassion.
&nbsp;
What&rsquo;s the most important thing you&rsquo;ve learned in your time at Catholic Charities of Lubbock?
The most important lesson I&rsquo;ve learned is that there is incredible strength and resilience in families facing adversity. Families possess a remarkable capacity for hope and determination, and it&rsquo;s an honor and my profound responsibility to be a part of supporting their journeys.
&nbsp;
What is something most people don&rsquo;t realize about Catholic Charities of Lubbock?
Most people don't realize the breadth of services we offer. We have dedicated teams supporting families by not only providing services from our organization but also sharing other community resources that offer housing assistance, legal aid, job training and more. Catholic Charities works collaboratively with local community partners to create a comprehensive support network designed to foster independence and growth.

Free Hygiene Items, Free Groceries, Plainview, Catholic Charities, Team Up

Catholic Charities of Lubbock, in collaboration with the Plainview Area Endowment and through a generous Team Up grant from Catholic Charities USA, is hosting a Free Community Distribution Event on Wednesday, May 7, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Shelter House, located at 101 SE 1st Street in Plainview.
&nbsp;
Hale County families are invited to stop by and receive free hygiene items and groceries while supplies last. The event is open to the public and no registration is required.&nbsp; This effort is part of the Team Up initiative, which focuses on creating stronger communities through connection, collaboration, and local partnerships.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
&nbsp;&ldquo;By working together, we are able to meet immediate needs and support families in practical, meaningful ways,&rdquo; said Cynthia Quintanilla, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Lubbock. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s especially important for us to be present in rural communities like Plainview, where resources are often limited. We want these families to know they&rsquo;re not forgotten and that help is available.&rdquo;

Throughout his historic papacy, Pope Francis inspired Catholics and all people of good will to live as Christ did. A modern-day prophet, Pope Francis read the signs of the times and awakened us to meaningful change in our behavior &mdash; within the Church and within the world. Complex challenges such as extreme poverty, homelessness, mental illness, forced migration, climate change and war did not intimidate him; they broke his heart and inspired him to call for a more merciful, charitable, just and other-centered world. 
More than any public figure of his time, Pope Francis emulated what he advocated. His authenticity came from his radical belief in God and commitment to be Christlike. He said what he meant, and his actions matched his words with uncommon consistency. Pope Francis exuded empathy. He spent his time in refugee camps, in hospitals, in prisons and in countries torn apart by war. He spoke truth to power. He celebrated his birthday focusing on others: spending time with homeless women and men or sick children. He routinely called the cell phones of people who had suffered to offer encouragement and prayer. He bowed his head and asked for our blessing before giving his inaugural blessing as pope. He declined the apostolic palace in favor of a simple room at Santa Marta. He was a pope of the people, a pope of surprises, a pope of joy and a pope of tenderness.
&nbsp;
As we mourn this profound loss, it is impossible not to be reminded of many powerful, stirring images of Pope Francis: iconic pictures of him washing the feet of inmates, of women, of Muslims; exuberant selfies with teenagers; joyful interactions with newly married couples and children; and his loving, tactile embrace of a 53-year-old man afflicted with neurofibromatosis. In 2019, when Pope Francis received South Sudan&rsquo;s political leaders at the Vatican, he got down on his knees to kiss their feet, imploring them not to return to civil war.
&nbsp;
Without fail, Pope Francis asked one thing of everyone he met: &ldquo;Pray for me.&rdquo; Today, and in the days, weeks, months and years ahead, let us continue to pray for Pope Francis. Let us also pray fervently that his extraordinary example of selflessness, humility and service will continue to steer us toward a better version of ourselves and a holier world. Let us be people of profound generosity; people who encounter and assist our neighbors; people of justice, peace and charity; people of solace, healing, hope and mercy; people who, like our beloved Pope Francis, exude the light and love of Jesus Christ.

Catholic Charities of Lubbock will host its 2nd Annual Run to Remember, a family friendly 5K run/walk, in remembrance of our neighbors on the South Plains who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, hunger, crisis, and trauma. Lenten Reflection, Cynthia Quintanilla, Catholic Charities of Lubbock

In today&rsquo;s Gospel, Jesus&rsquo; Sermon on the Mount includes a very direct teaching for his disciples &ndash; and for us.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
I am reminded of my earliest faith formation classes in which we were challenged to memorize all ten commandments.&nbsp;&nbsp;Looking back, I can see how memorizing them established the very foundations of my faith.&nbsp;&nbsp;For me, the lesson established fundamental principles of what is required to be a good Christian.&nbsp;&nbsp;That&rsquo;s what Jesus was doing for his disciples: establishing a motive for the work they were called to do.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The Lenten season also helps establish motive for us.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic almost a year ago, I was motivated to change my eating habits.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&rsquo;d just listened to one of my colleagues talk about her own self-care and how changing her eating habits had helped her see how important it is to have the inside of her body match the outside of her body.&nbsp;&nbsp;A spiritual transformation is now taking place with each decision I make to eat healthier foods - foods that fuel my body.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Our work at Catholic Charities is continued fuel for the journey for so many people.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our food pantries provide for physical needs, our mental health programs provide for emotional needs, our leadership development programs provide for spiritual needs, and our emergency assistance programs provide for the financial needs of our community.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Together we are the church, and there are a variety of ways others can join us in this demanding work.&nbsp;&nbsp;The challenge is to make the choice to be motivated by the Holy Spirit to live a life that follows God&rsquo;s commands, teaching others to do the same through our example, and working to be part of His eternal kingdom when our days here on earth are complete.&nbsp; &nbsp;May we all embrace Jesus&rsquo; example of love through charity, compassion and sacrifice.

International Women's Day Conference, Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities of Lubbock will celebrate International Women&rsquo;s Day with a free conference for all women, on Friday, March 7th from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Diocese of Lubbock - Guadalupe Youth and Family Center, located at 101 N. Avenue P. &nbsp;The event will include guest speakers, break-out rooms, and resource booths. A light breakfast, and lunch, will be served. The Kinship Navigation Program of Catholic Charities aims to keep children out of the already over-burdened foster care system by providing support, resources, and advocacy for family members caring for family children.

On December 12th, City Bank announced the 30 recipients of the 2024 $60,000 Community Rewards program.

Rewards were given to the top five recipients in six categories. The top finisher in the Basic Needs category was Catholic Charities, winning $4,000. Catholic Charities of Lubbock also received an additional $3,000 as the top vote-getter during the month-long voting period.

This year marks the 17th consecutive year of City Bank&rsquo;s Community Rewards program. On Thursday, December 12th, United Healthcare Dental made a generous donation of $1,000 to Catholic Charities to assist in serving the basic needs of area families.&nbsp; Carmen Martinez, UHC Dental Member Advocate, and Jesse Padilla, UHC Provider Relations Advocate, made the check presentation.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Martinez stated, "Catholic Charities is well deserving of this donation because of all the ways the agency serves the community, including the rural areas."
&nbsp;
The UHC Dental Plan serves the Texas Children's Medicaid and CHIP program throughout the state. UHC Dental provides dental coverage for Medicaid and CHIP dental members.

The UHC dental plan offers a large network of General Dentists and Dental Specialists across Texas, and works with network dentists to make sure families and children get the quality dental care needed for a healthy smile!

United Healthcare Dental Presents Donation to Catholic Charities

With the holiday season in full swing, TXU Energy and Catholic Charities of Lubbock, along with support from H-E-B, and the Diocese of Lubbock, are teaming up to spread winter warmth to Lubbock-area families.

This year, TXU Energy is donating $10,000 to provide 300 turkeys to families in need. The turkeys will be distributed on Wednesday, December 18, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Guadalupe Youth &amp; Family Center of the Diocese of Lubbock, located at 101 N. Avenue P. (the former Guadalupe Elementary School, across from St. Joseph&rsquo;s Catholic Church.)
&nbsp;
Turkeys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required.&nbsp;The limit is one turkey per vehicle.

The Catholic Charities Emergency Food Pantry is a vital short-term solution for low-income residents, ensuring that community members have access to food essentials in times of urgent need. From January to October 2024 alone, the Catholic Charities food pantry served 2,436 individuals, including children, the elderly, and those experiencing homelessness.
&nbsp; &ldquo;When people are waiting for food bank assistance or SNAP benefits to arrive, everyday counts. This partnership ensures that we can continue to offer emergency food support to those who need it most,&rdquo; said Cynthia Quintanilla, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Lubbock.
United Supermarkets has a longstanding commitment to fighting hunger and supporting local communities. Catholic Charities of Lubbock, 40th Anniversary, Open House, Mass, Reception

Catholic Charities of Lubbock is thrilled to announce the celebration of 40 years of dedicated service to the community with special events open to the public.
The agency will celebrate and acknowledge the impact and contributions of volunteers and supporters who help make the work of Catholic Charities possible.
The celebration will begin with an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, at the Catholic Charities of Lubbock main office, located at 102 Avenue J. Highlights will include a mayoral proclamation at 10 a.m., a Lubbock Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. followed by refreshments, and a volunteer appreciation presentation at 1:30 p.m.
On Saturday, November 16, Most Reverend Robert Coerver, Bishop of Lubbock, will celebrate a special mass at 9 a.m., at Christ the King Cathedral, located at 4011 54th Street. Immediately following Mass, a reception will be held at the Christ the King Cathedral Family Activity Center.
Catholic Charities of Lubbock has assisted approximately three quarters of a million individuals in its rich 40-year history, providing essential support and resources to help those in need across West Texas and the South Plains.
Catholic Charities of Lubbock has been a vital part of the West Texas community, serving all 25 counties within the Diocese of Lubbock, plus an additional 11 counties through our Family and Youth Success grant. &nbsp;Since 1984, Catholic Charities has provided essential services such as free counseling to youth and families, emergency assistance, and educational programs to individuals and families in need. Catholic Charities serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, or orientation. Our focus is on the vulnerable and in-need in our community and our goal is to transition families and individuals from crisis to stability and self-sufficiency.&nbsp;

Catholic Charitties Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Knights of Columbus Council #8097 will host &ldquo;Not So Silent Knights,&rdquo; a dance and toy donation drive on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 8PM to 12 Midnight (doors open at 7PM) at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 1619 Erskine Street in Lubbock.
&nbsp;
The event is a Halloween-themed costume party, with prizes for the best costumes and door prizes. Entry for the dance is a donation of a new toy for a boy or girl (ages 6 to 14 years), and a donation of five non-perishable food items. Those without a toy and food donation will be admitted to the event at $20 per person. Those who cannot attend the event, but still would like to donate a toy, can scan the QR code below:

Toy donations will be distributed during the Christmas holiday to youth clients already enrolled in programs at Catholic Charities-Diocese of Lubbock. These include children who are part of the Kinship Navigation Program, the Family &amp; Youth Success (FAYS) program, and the National Family Support Network (NFSN) program. The Kinship Navigation program serves families who are raising family children who are not biologically theirs, with the goal of keeping children out of foster care. The FAYS program provides free case management and counseling to youth 0-17 and their families. NFSN provides virtual and in-person parenting classes. All programs are free, and along with other Catholic Charities&rsquo; programs, serve Lubbock and 29 surrounding counties.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Knights of Columbus is a Catholic brotherhood organization based on charity, unity, and fraternity, that supports many local projects within the community. Knights of Columbus, Council #8097 is associated with St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lubbock.

The principal purpose of LEARN Inc. is to assist individuals with beginning, furthering, and pursuing their education, and to afford individuals the opportunity to improve their educational, social, and economic future.
 The Parent Empowerment Program of Catholic Charities, similarly, works to support low-income and single parents in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty through education.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Sabrina Robbins, has served as the Director of the Direct Client Assistance Program, which includes the Parent Empowerment Program at Catholic Charities for many years. Her efforts through the program have helped hundreds of students further their education, and improve their life situation.&nbsp; Many graduates of the Parent Empowerment Program have found stable employment as teachers, social workers, nurses, and in many other careers.

<h3>The Kinship Program</h3>

 When Mar&iacute;a found herself unexpectedly raising her grandson Nova, she faced many challenges. Because Mar&iacute;a isn&rsquo;t Nova&rsquo;s birth parent, she had trouble getting the paperwork they needed for things like school enrollment and making doctors&rsquo; appointments for his speech therapy.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;I never thought I would end up here,&rdquo; Mar&iacute;a says. &ldquo;I did not think I would raise my own grandson. It was a traumatic situation for me because I wasn't finding the answers, and the pandemic was happening, and no one was doing therapy. We had no options at that time. I did not know what was going to happen until someone recommended the Kinship Program. Then I started to feel like there was help.&rdquo;

The Kinship Program is a free program designed to support grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other family members who are raising children who can&rsquo;t live with their birth parents. For generations, extended families have played an important role in raising children whose parents are having a hard time. Known as kinship care, this is a valuable way to offer kids the stability they need to grow into healthy, successful adults. Through the Kinship Program, caregivers and children can find help with resources, advice, and the support of a caring community who shares many of their same struggles.
&nbsp;
After facing obstacles while helping to raise her five nieces and nephews, Teresa (Terri) Rodriguez started the Kinship Program in 2020 to help other families. Today, Terri is the director of the Kinship Program in Lubbock, and Mar&iacute;a and her family remain close to her heart. &ldquo;Mar&iacute;a came to us,&rdquo; Terri says. &ldquo;We laughed, we cried, and later she told me what she needed. And that she didn't know where to start. And that's when I told her, don't worry, I am going to help you.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
Through the Kinship Program, Nova was able to get access to counseling and the speech therapy services he needed. Even though he was typically shy around new adults, he felt a particular bond with Terri. &ldquo;Terri encouraged Nova to start looking at life differently. And he did not want to see anyone else, so he did not put up a fight to go,&rdquo; Mar&iacute;a says. &ldquo;For example, in school he was not learning. So, he stayed with her, and she gave him therapy for six months. And that is where he started to talk and to stay for more time without me. So, from there we started to be able to look for more help for him.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
When Nova started to talk, Mar&iacute;a began to feel like their world was opening up. &ldquo;We started to see that there were solutions and that the Kinship Program was what was helping us with everything we thought was impossible to overcome,&rdquo; Mar&iacute;a says. &ldquo;I enrolled him in school, and in school he started to pick up on speech. He was doing multiple therapies. He was not scared anymore; he began to deal with his fears and to overcome his traumas.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
The Kinship Program offers a wide range of services that vary by provider group across the state. &ldquo;We do a little bit of everything,&rdquo; Terri says. &ldquo;Kinship can provide help with rent or electric and water bills for caretakers with kids. Sometimes kids arrive at their new home without clothes. We help them with clothes and food. Sometimes they need medications, too. Or let us say a child comes as a baby, because there are also newborns, and the caretakers need help getting a car seat to transport them, we can help with that.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
One of the key things Kinship does is connect caregivers and children with other programs that are available in their specific communities. &ldquo;We help the family with whatever they need,&rdquo; Terri says. &ldquo;We have another program that can help kids manage trauma they might have when they get to the family member&rsquo;s house that&rsquo;s taking care of them. There&rsquo;s a program that can assist with medications. Or if the biological parents are trying to regain custody of their kids, we have a program to empower parents and help them get ahead. If people want to go back to school to earn their high school diploma, we can help them.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
Many families feel that one of the most valuable parts of the Kinship Program is the relationships that form between families during weekly support groups. By helping each other get through challenges, both caregivers and children build confidence and realize they are not alone. &ldquo;We would get in small groups on the weekends so the kids can get to know each other,&rdquo; Mar&iacute;a says. &ldquo;The families we sit down with, there is a bond&mdash;we get to know each other and help with each other's problems. They support us, and we support them. I had not found the right people, but now I have found them.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Kinship wants to give people hope&mdash;not just caretakers, but children,&rdquo; Terri says. &ldquo;To be able to get ahead and feel supported not only by their own families, but by other families. It builds those relationships that we can trust one another enough to talk and be sincere.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
At the Kinship Program, caregivers such as relatives and other individuals who have a relationship with the child can receive services if at least one of the children in their care is under the age of 18 at the time of enrollment. &ldquo;Kinship is different because they do not say, &lsquo;Do you have papers or not?&rsquo;&rdquo; Mar&iacute;a says. &ldquo;Kinship does not ask anything. Your race does not matter, your nationality, none of that. Kinship offers love and support for everyone&mdash;it does not matter where they come from.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
Mar&iacute;a credits the Kinship Program with changing her life&mdash;and Nova&rsquo;s&mdash;for the better. &ldquo;I feel so good in this program because I got out from where I was and now my life continues to improve. Terri sends us a message every morning to see how we're doing and what we need. There is hope, it's out there; all you have to do is come to the Kinship Program and you'll find it. Today with Kinship, I am very happy, and my grandson is very happy, and he is someone who already has a bright future.&rdquo;
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
The Kinship Program is currently available in Brown, Crosby, Fort Bend, Hale, Harris, Hill, Hockley, Johnson, Jones, Lubbock, Lynn, Palo Pinto, Parker, Tarrant, Taylor, Waller. To qualify for this child and family service, families must live in the specified service delivery area county or combined service area. Because the program is offered through local community partners, availability, eligibility, and resources vary by county.

On Saturday, August 24, volunteers will distribute 1,000 tower fans to South Plains families, made possible by a $22,000 donation from TXU Energy. The donation is part of TXU Energy&rsquo;s signature Beat the Heat program. For more than 25 years, TXU Energy has helped thousands of Texans stay safe and cool in dangerous summer heat.

The Walmart Supercenter at 1911 Marsha Sharp Freeway, off Ave. Q in Lubbock, partnered to provide the tower fans for this event at a deep discount and will deliver and help distribute the fans.

The dedicated, selfless staff of Catholic Charities agencies are aided in this work by the indispensable contributions of more than 215,000 volunteers nationwide. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will donate over $200,000 to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Lubbock to help support the agency&rsquo;s Parent Empowerment Program. The check presentation will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13th, 2024 at Catholic Charities main office, located at 102 Avenue J in Lubbock.

The Parent Empowerment Program helps single and low-income parents on the South Plains transition out of poverty through education. Those who qualify can receive assistance with tuition, uniforms, books, and other services that support the family. Since its inception in 1992, the program has helped hundreds of individuals transition into careers in the healthcare industry, education, social services, and many other areas.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;At the heart of our faith is the principle of loving our neighbors and serving those in need,&rdquo; said Derid Ure, president of the Lubbock Texas North Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve found some amazing community partners with the same mission, and we know that it takes all of us to make a meaningful difference for individuals in our communities. No one person or organization can meet all the needs in the community,&rdquo; Ure said. &ldquo;The spirit of service and selflessness is strong here in the South Plains. When people of different faiths and background come together for a common purpose, great things can happen.&rdquo;

The donations were made possible by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from around the world and represent confidence in the unified efforts of diverse Lubbock organizations to serve those most in need.

Catholic Charities of Lubbock, a local organization dedicated to serving our neighbors on the South Plains who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, hunger, crisis, and trauma, is pleased to announce a strategic reorganization aimed at enhancing its operational efficiency and furthering its mission. As part of this restructuring, members of the Catholic Charities team will receive new job titles, reflecting their invaluable contributions and leadership within the organization. Effective immediately, the following individuals will assume their new titles, as listed below:

Cynthia Quintanilla started her career with Catholic Charities in 1996. Her first role with the organization was as an Administrative Assistant. In 2014, Quintanilla was named Executive Director. She will continue serving as the leader of the organization, strategically guiding a staff of over 40 team members in serving some of the most vulnerable populations in our community.

Michael Perez Granger began his career with Catholic Charities in May 2021. As Chief Operations Officer, Granger will continue to help guide the day-to-day administrative, financial and operational functions of the agency, with the goal of elevating the organization and empowering the leadership team to make an impact on the community.

Jennifer Lopez has been with Catholic Charities 16 years. She worked as a Case Manager with the Family and Youth Success program for 14 years, and &nbsp;was promoted to FAYS Program Director in June of 2022. In her new role as Chief Programs Officer, Lopez will oversee all Catholic Charities programs including the FAYS, Kinship Navigation, Emergency Assistance, Parent Empowerment, and Legal Immigration program, as well as the Resale Center.

Erin Baxter started with Catholic Charities as the Director of Development in October 2023. As Chief Development Officer, Baxter will oversee Catholic Charities&rsquo; philanthropy program to advance the agency&rsquo;s mission and work by securing local, state, and national grants, along with leading strategic fundraising efforts, donor relationships, and stewardship of funding. Baxter is actively working towards expanding Catholic Charities&rsquo; philanthropy program.

Carol Alonzo began working with Catholic Charities in August 2021. As Chief Marketing &amp; Communications Officer, Alonzo will continue to bring awareness of the agency&rsquo;s mission through brand management, utilizing the organization&rsquo;s website, social media, and other marketing efforts. Alonzo will also continue overseeing volunteer activities within the organization.

&ldquo;We are thrilled to recognize the hard work and dedication of these outstanding leaders,&rdquo; said Quintanilla. &ldquo;Their new roles will enable us to streamline our operations and better serve our community. Lubbock High School&rsquo;s Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) organization, will host a Spring Fashion Show featuring outfits created by LHS Fashion Design students at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th in the historic Lubbock High School auditorium (2004 19th).&nbsp; &nbsp;
The show will feature current fashion trends, with hand-made designs created by Fashion Design students under the guidance of Lubbock High School instructor, Dr. Maria Teresa Leos-Duemer. Tickets for the show are $10 per person and can be purchased at Lubbock High School in Room 2505, or at the door on the evening of the event. A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to Catholic Charities.
Previously, the Lubbock High FCCLA organization and Fashion Design students have partnered with Catholic Charities on various projects to help students gain experience in the merchandising, retail, and fashion industry.&nbsp; Students have produced fashion shows featuring clothing items from the non-profit&rsquo;s thrift store, The Resale Center, and fashion design students have completed internships at the thrift store, as well. &nbsp;
According to Dr. Leos-Duemer, &ldquo;Our students have worked so hard on their designs, and we are so excited to show them off.&nbsp; However, we also want to teach the students the importance of giving back to their community. This show is a great opportunity to share our talent, and our treasure with others.&rdquo;
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national nonprofit student organization that helps youth develop leadership and workplace skills to prepare for both college and careers through peer-to-peer education, community engagement, and the application of skills learned in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) classroom.

LHS Students Share Talent and Treasure in Spring Fashion Show

Catholic Charities of Lubbock will host its inaugural Run to Remember, a 5K and fun run/walk, in remembrance of our neighbors on the South Plains who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, hunger, crisis, and trauma. The event is proudly sponsored by TXU Energy and will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Catholic Charities (102 Avenue J). The running and walking routes will pass through Lubbock&rsquo;s historic Guadalupe Neighborhood, Aztlan Park, and Mackenzie Park.
&nbsp;
Run to Remember is a family-friendly event open to all ages and fitness levels. The fun walk is free and will circle Atzlan Park. The 5K is $30 per individual or $200 for a team of up to eight. A t-shirt and medal of completion will be included in the cost of the registration for 5K participants. All participants will be required to complete a registration and release form. 
&ldquo;This is a great opportunity for Catholic Charities to take a moment to reflect and really remember why we do the work we do &ndash; to serve those who are in need, just as Christ said in Matt. 25:40. It&rsquo;s our mission to help those in our community who are less fortunate and who experience extremely trying times and difficult circumstances. Your partnership in this year&rsquo;s Run to Remember will put food on the table and clothe children and families, purchase medications and hearing aids for the elderly and disabled, and so, so much more. Catholic Charities to Host 5K and Fun Run/Walk

Child Abuse Prevention Month, Catholic Charities, Services for Families

Staff, board members, and volunteers of Catholic Charities, along with children from the neighboring Guadalupe Early Learning Center, and representatives of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, kicked \off Child Abuse Prevention Month on Wednesday, April 3rd at Catholic Charities&rsquo; main office.
The event, &ldquo;A Call for Superheroes,&rdquo;&nbsp; included a visit from Sasha Rasco, Chief Prevention and Community Well-Being Officer, with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) in Austin, who spoke about the services available to children and families on the South Plains. The partnership between Catholic Charities of Lubbock and TDFPS has been in place for almost 30 years and has provided free counseling and case management to thousands of children and families in Lubbock and surrounding counties.&nbsp;
The children of the neighoring Guadalupe Early Learning Center joined the event and&nbsp; partipated in a variety of interactive superhero themed activities. Superhero characters, courtesy of Lubbock Community Theater's Capes &amp; Crowns, also visited with the children as they went through a kid-sized obstacle course.&nbsp;

Catholic Charities, a Lubbock Area United Way partner agency, works year-round to prevent child abuse by offering many free services and programs to families in need. In addition to free counseling, services offered by Catholic Charities include a program to help low-income parents further their education and break the cycle of poverty, emergency assistance with basic needs, elderly outreach, and resources for kinship families.&nbsp;
A big thanks to Monterey Church of Christ, Steadfast Realty, and P. Chilton Events who also helped make this event possible.&nbsp;

Catholic Charities Calls on Superheroes to Help Stop Child Abuse

Catholic Charities of Lubbock will celebrate women on Friday, March 8th - a day known around the world as International Women&rsquo;s Day. The theme for this year&rsquo;s event is &ldquo;Unstoppable,&rdquo; and will take place from 9 a.m. to Noon at the Diocese of Lubbock - Christian Renewal Center, located at 4620 4th Street. This event is free and will include lunch, guest speakers, and resource booths. Presenters at the conference will include: Nedra Hotchkins, Executive Director of the Lubbock Children&rsquo;s Health Clinic, Tricia Turnbow, a senior pastor at The Worship Center in Lubbock, and Melinda Morales, Family and Youth Success Counselor with Catholic Charities.
&nbsp;
Special guests will include women who serve as kinship caregivers. These are grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and even family friends, who are caring for children who are not biologically theirs. The Kinship Navigation Program of Catholic Charities aims to provide support, resources, and advocacy for family members caring for family children.

At Lubbock Area United Way's Annual Meeting on January 25th, Catholic Charities employee, Maria Infante, was recognized for 30 years of service to a partner agency.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Infante serves as a Case Manager at Catholic Charities, assisting individuals with immigration processes such as citizenship, and replacement of legal permanent resident cards.&nbsp;
