LDS Church Makes Large Donation to Catholic Charities Program

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will donate over $200,000 to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Lubbock to help support the agency’s Parent Empowerment Program. The check presentation will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13th, 2024 at Catholic Charities main office, located at 102 Avenue J in Lubbock.

The Parent Empowerment Program helps single and low-income parents on the South Plains transition out of poverty through education. Those who qualify can receive assistance with tuition, uniforms, books, and other services that support the family. Since its inception in 1992, the program has helped hundreds of individuals transition into careers in the healthcare industry, education, social services, and many other areas.

“At the heart of our faith is the principle of loving our neighbors and serving those in need,” said Derid Ure, president of the Lubbock Texas North Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We’ve found some amazing community partners with the same mission, and we know that it takes all of us to make a meaningful difference for individuals in our communities. No one person or organization can meet all the needs in the community,” Ure said. “The spirit of service and selflessness is strong here in the South Plains. When people of different faiths and background come together for a common purpose, great things can happen.”
